A Brief History of Winter Park
The history of Winter Park begins with a town called Tabernash. The hamlet of Tabernash is located just 12 miles north of Winter Park on US Highway 40. It was built as a railway town in the early 1900s, and it is where Linus Oliver “Doc” Graves first settled with his family at the age of 22 in 1922 to begin a pharmacy business. The early 20th century was a time of great prosperity for Tabernash, owing to the railway business; in 1905, tracks were built over Rollins Pass with a series of switchback loops with steep angles and hazardous snow situations.
However, in 1928, the Moffat Tunnel was constructed, and the route that ran over Rollins Pass became obsolete.
Doc and his wife Helen were determined to establish a mountain community for themselves and their children, so they purchased 10 acres of property on April 20, 1932, in what is now known as Winter Park.
They named the area “Hideaway Park” and constructed ten tiny vacation cabins which were rented monthly, mostly to hunters and fishermen. The number of cabins grew, and a café and service station were constructed under the name “Doc’s Place.” Within a few years, the village had grown by three businesses and nearly doubled its population.
In 1978, Hideaway Park was incorporated and renamed Winter Park. The name change was prompted by Denver’s desire to establish a mountain park system to promote winter sports to visitors and residents. The city of West Portal began the creation of the adjacent Winter Park Ski Area in order to attract tourists and locals interested in skiing.
Besides Visiting a Winter Park Dispensary, What is There to Do?
Winter Park is best know for its ski resort. With 3,081 skiable acres, Winter Park / Mary Jane ski resort is the third-largest in the state. However, the town also has a great downtown area that is filled with winter fun and activities for all ages!
In addition to winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and cross country skiing – there are numerous summer activities as well. Guests can take advantage of hiking trails at Rocky Mountain National Park or even go on an alpine slide ride. Other winter activities include sleigh rides, snowshoeing, and even a winter fatbike tour! In fact, there’s so much to do that you could easily spend your entire winter vacation in town.
On your way up to enjoy these activities, we recommend that you stop by Pure Harvest Cannabis Dispensary to purchase some fine cannabis products. For more convenience, you can even order online before leaving home. Then, just pull off the highway at Dumont (exit 235) and pick up your entire online purchase.
Marijuana Options in Winter Park
Recreational marijuana retail was just recently legalized in the town of Winter Park, so the options to pickup fine cannabis from a dispensary after you arrive will be limited. This makes Pure Harvest Cannabis Dispensary your best option for select strains of cannabis products.
Where to Stay in Winter Park
As with any ski town, there is no shortage of lodging in here. Depending on what your tastes are, you can find a hotel, condo rental or even choose from one of the many winter cabin rentals. In addition to the hotels listed on this page, VRBO and Air BnB are great options for your winter accommodations!
After you’ve finished dispensary shopping and exploring all that the town has to offer – we think it’s time to head back home with some fine cannabis products in hand!
How to Get Around the city

Places That are a Must-See While Visiting the Area

As befitting the town’s namesake, the resort is home to one of Colorado’s most popular ski resorts. The resort spans three mountains and has 34 different trails for all skill levels. Just down the road from our location is an alpine slide. After a long day of skiing, be sure to stop by Doc’s Place for dinner and drinks!
